Online Dating

With all of my analysis of technology, connectivity, and online tools it only seems fitting that the world of online dating be discussed. Especially since Canadians are apparently one of the worlds leading countries in online dating usage. This article from The Canadian Press highlights the popularity of online dating, and analyzes some of the available tools.

I think online dating is growing in popularity due to its convenience, in addition to our changing lifestyles. As socializing is increasingly becoming predominantly online, it only seems fitting that meeting prospective mates would become an online occurrence too. I also think the stigma of dating someone you met online is dwindling too, maybe this is just due to my aging though. Either way it is an activity that will not soon go away, as mentioned in the article.

The article did mention how Plenty of Fish   (a popular online dating site) has an outdated look to it. While it is a free source, it is not nearly as modern looking as its competitors. Even though it is outdated in look, it is still very popular. The article credits this to the fact that it is a “tool” and still serves its purpose. I found this very interesting, and unique. As most of the online services I utilize are tools (banking, email, Facebook..) I still desire them to be the most modern and up to date, even in look. You would think that especially in the department of online dating someone would want to use the most high tech up to date tool, regardless the website is one of the most popular.

I heard them talking about this on the radio the other morning too. Another perspective on “what users want” from their online tools, may very well be that they are comfortable with what they started out using. When they first changed Facebook however many months ago, I was outraged and wanted the “old format” back. I have since adjusted to the change, but really don’t find myself on there was much anymore. I wonder if I’m just getting more of a life or if I actually would be on there more if the format had never been changed. Just a thought, but perhaps some people are just fine with keeping things the same, while others are constantly looking for something “newer and better”.

I had no idea Canadians were leading in the online dating fad. I think it is completely connected to our lifestyles and the convenience which I personally think is really sad. While I too embrace all of what technology has brought to me (i.e- banking, facebook, twitter, email, etc) I think in some ways technology is ruining personal relationships I think it is important that society draws a line somewhere however I don’t see this ever happening.

Interesting post! I actually have a woman here at work that is on POF. She seriously updates me daily with all the guys who are sending her messages (which she calls letters- so cute) She has met up with quite a few of these guys although they don’t all turn out to be keepers. On a free dating website it is interesting to think about how good your dating possibilities are. Are they better than if you go on a paid dating website like eharmony? Wouldn’t more people choose the free option over the paid option? Or maybe it’s the other way around, the people who are serious about meeting people pay for the better service. Either way, online dating is no longer “taboo” or a hidden secret for people. It is totally acceptable in society, and well used, and like you said, it doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon.
